Green Construction

LEED compliant

Being LEED certified is definitely an upward trend. More and more of our customers are asking for environmentally friendly products for their dental practice. In fact, due to popular demand, one of MCC’s main suppliers ONLY offers material that complies with the ratings to be LEED certified. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is the rating system used in over 160 countries and is used to evaluate the environmental performance of a building. The system is credit based and allows projects/buildings to earn points for taking environmentally friendly actions either during construction or the use of the building itself. It ensures that a LEED-certified building is designed and built using the strategies aimed at improving the things that matter most, (energy saving, CO2 emissions reduction to name a few)  and recognizing a high standard performance in the following categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation in Design, and Regional Property. In each category, there are different sections in which you can earn points to become certified.

Our ‘Green’ Dental Cabinets

Our ST Sterilization units are constructed from a product made from a blend of new and recycled polymers, which are all FDA approved and are all formaldehyde free. The material contains no known harmful toxins and no off-gassing occurs when the sheets are cut and fabricated. The material also inhibits growth of stain and odor causing bacteria, algae and fungi. You could earn up to 6 points when choosing this material for fulfilling the following criteria: purchasing durable goods, recycled content, and low emitting materials.

MCC’s Solid Surface countertops are GREENGUARD Gold certified for indoor air quality; the strict criteria considers safety for environmentally sensitive individuals like the elderly and children. As a result, our Solid Surface countertops are acceptable for use in healthcare facilities, and are referenced as part of the LEED rating system. Some of our Solid Surface choices are also made from recycled content. Dental professionals can call in to speak with one of our Representatives about these color choices!

Our dental cabinets have been granted Eco-Certified Composite Grademark Program (ECC) Certification by the Composite Panel Association (CPA), demonstrating an exemplary commitment to the sustainable use of wood fiber and to environmental stewardship. They meet or exceed the following five requirements:

  • Carbon Footprint – demonstrate that the panel’s carbon store offsets its cradle-to-gate carbon footprint as determined in kg-CO2 equivalents of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  • Local and Renewable Resource – At least 85% of total annual wood fibre used shall be sourced within 402 km of where they are manufactured.
  • Recycled/Recovered – Use a minimum of 75% recycled or recovered fiber; OR at least 50% recycled or recovered fiber AND a minimum of 5% post-consumer fiber. Percentages shall be calculated on a weight basis as measured in bone dry tons (bdt).
  • Sustainability – Documented that greater than 97% fiber furnish brought on-site to manufacture panels is either converted into panels or other non-waste products.
  • Wood Sourcing – That the manufacturer holds a valid assessment and certificate from a certifying agency recognized by CPA such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC—Controlled Wood Standard or Chain of Custody Standard) or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI—Fiber Sourcing Standard).
