MCC Exclusive! Founder Giovanni (John) Cocciardi reflects on 47 years in the dental cabinet and furniture industry.
Giovanni (John) Cocciardi started MCC Dental in 1969. The company makes innovative, high quality dental furniture and cabinets for dental offices throughout North America. Today, Giovanni’s sons run the day to day operations of MCC Dental but Giovanni still comes into work every day, to provide his support and guidance. In this blog, we catch up with MCC’s founder, Giovanni, for an espresso and to get his reflections on successfully servicing the dental industry for 47 years.

Q: Giovanni, why did you decide to start your own dental furniture company?
GC: I was working for a US company, making dental cabinets to service the Canadian marketplace. They shut down their Canadian operations due to transportation and logistic issues. The Sales Rep said to me, ‘It’s now or never.’ I had worked with wood and built custom cabinets since I was 17 in Panni, Italy. I knew how to do it. That’s how we started Modular & Custom Cabinets (MCC).
Q: When did you know MCC was a success?
GC: When we started out, we were servicing the Canadian market and Buffalo, NY. We went wherever our dealers were doing business. We made many cabinets, not just dental. After two years, one of our Dealers said to us that they were worried that if they gave us more orders for the dental industry, we wouldn’t be able to keep up. They said we needed more space. They told us they would give us bigger orders if we got more space. That’s when I knew. So we expanded into a 15,000 sq ft space. We grew with the dealers. We are now in a 38,000 sq ft building and looking to expand into an even bigger space.
Q: What can you tell us about servicing the dental industry all these years?
GC: You have to create new things for the market. MCC was the first to introduce a Sterilization Center (called ST Sterilization), made from materials that offer 99.99% antimicrobial protection, which means the materials do not allow water damage.
You have to watch the competition. You have to go with the technology. We have expensive machines that build the core cabinets. But the cabinets are finished with people. Attention to detail never changes. Years ago, one dental room was one room. Today’s dental offices are more open concept. That’s one reason our free standing cabinets are so popular; they also work as space dividers.
Q: Your sons now run the Business. Tell us more about that.
GC: My sons started coming to MCC when they were 10 years old to sweep the floor. First, they came because it was fun. Then they came after school to help out with the business. I had a plan to have them involved in the business so they could eventually run it. One son leads design, one leads manufacturing, one son leads mobile and one runs the company. I also have one son that is not in the business. He does his own thing. I can honestly say that my four sons who run MCC are doing a good job. They are doing good things for the company.
Q: Tell us about the importance of Q/A and Service
GC: A lot of things can happen to a cabinet as part of the manufacturing process. We have people that look at our cabinets in detail for quality assurance before they get packaged for shipping. A dentist will have a vision in their mind of what they want the finished look of their office to be like. When everything is assembled by the local installation team, it may not be 100% what they imagined. Sometimes, we get called out for some fine tuning at dental offices. They want the home office team to come and take care of it. We always go if asked because customer satisfaction is a priority. All of our cabinets have a 2 year warranty and our ST Sterilization Center has a 7 year warranty.
Q: What are you most proud of?
GC: I grew my family and built something for my sons and my 11 grandchildren.
Q: You make long lasting cabinets. Tell us about that.
GC: We use the best materials we can find for all our cabinets. Some of our laminated surfaces come all the way from Italy. We have customers from 25 years ago who still have cabinets they bought at that time. In some ways, it’s no different than anything else. Customers who are good at keeping their workspaces clean and dry will have a long life for their furniture.
Q: What message would you like to share with your partners and customers this year?
GC: Thank you and Happy Holidays from MCC!
